Day 4

Welcome to

Today's Activity: Schedule Distraction-Free Social Time

We’ve all been there: We are in the middle of an engaged conversation when suddenly… our conversation partner grabs their phone and checks a message they just received.  According to a study by the Pew Foundation, 89% of participants admitted to have checked their phone while in conversation with friends or family, and 82% said that this negatively impacted the quality of the interaction.

While technology has made it easier to stay in touch or connecting with new people, it can also lead to a sense of disconnection and superficiality in our relationships, impacting our real-life interactions. Scientists like Sherry Turkle have shown how just the presence of our phones in the room can make us feel less empathy and understanding for the person in front of us.

Today’s Activity

  • Schedule a device-free coffee with a friend or colleague. Use this time to really be present for the other person and observe how the conversation differs.

  • Voluntary: Try out the “Active Listening” exercise with your conversation partner.

Emma’s Approach: Emma introduced device-free meals with her husband and teenage kids. Now, at dinner time, everybody puts their phones into a box for the duration of the meal.

Jake’s Approach: Jake introduced device-free lunches with his girlfriend Becca. During this time, the two are fully present for each other.

More ways to strengthen your social connections in a digital world:

  • Intentional Communication
Instead of a text or email, consider calling or meeting someone in person. Observe the difference in your connection.

  • Mindful Social Media Use
When using social media, focus on engaging in meaningful ways, such as having active dialogue and conversation rather than passive scrolling.

Remember:

  • This is not about judging ourselves or others about our device habits when with other people, it's about enriching your relationships through mindful use of technology.

See you on Day 5!
